Carter-Ricks Funeral Homes Phone 573-898-2181 / Fax 573-898-3148 Newspaper Notice of Death Mary Elizabeth Schmitt Funeral services for Mary Elizabeth Schmitt of Winfield, MO, formerly of Foley, MO, were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 1, 2006 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home near Winfield. Rev. Richard Turnbull of Winfield officiated with burial in the Winfield Cemetery in Winfield. Serving as pallbearers were Buddy Presley, Jerry Heitman, Gary Cannon, Terry Lynch, Buddy McKeever and Donnie Stroer. Mrs. Schmitt, 69, died Tuesday afternoon, August 29, 2006 at the Lincoln County Nursing & Rehab Center in Troy, MO. Born May 15, 1937 in Winfield, she was the daughter of Leo and Carmen Iola Grigsby Skinner. A lifelong resident of Lincoln County, she was a 1955 graduate of Elsberry High School in Elsberry, MO. She was united in marriage on June 9, 1969 in Old Monroe, MO to Robert Bruce Schmitt. They owned and operated a service station and store in Foley for several years before she changed locations of Schmitt's Pantry grocery store. She sold the store in 2004, retiring after more than 30 years as a business owner in Foley. Mrs. Schmitt served as Mayor of the City of Foley for five terms, as well as serving on the Foley City Board of Aldermen for many, many years before she retired. She was preceded in death by her father, Leo Skinner; her mother, Carmen Hilton; her step-father, Cliston Hilton; and her beloved husband, Robert B. Schmitt, who died August 1, 1978. Survivors include her sister, Lou Cannon and her husband, Jack, of Troy, MO; two nieces, two nephews, nine great-nieces and great-nephews, one great, great-niece; special friends, Terry and Sissy Lynch; and several other relatives and friends. Visitation was held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 31, 2006 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home near Winfield.
