The Most Reverend Mitchell T. Rozanski, Archbishop of St. Louis, will officiate. Interment will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Old Monroe. Father Greg, 88, passed away Saturday night, March 30, 2024 at Mother of Good Counsel in St. Louis, MO. Born March 25, 1936 in St. Louis, MO, he was the youngest of six children born to Frederick J. and Amelia Ebenreck Schmidt. His father passed away when he was just a year old, and Greg was raised by his mother, brothers, and sisters. He attended Cardinal Glennon College-Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis and was ordained to the priesthood on March 18, 1961. Father Greg served several parishes, including St. Ferdinand in Florissant, MO from 1961-1967, St. John the Baptist in St. Louis from 1967-1972, St. Sebastian in St. Louis County from 1972-1977, St. Paul in Fenton, MO from 1977-1979, Epiphany in St. Louis from 1979-1981, St. Genevieve Church from 1981-1987, and Margaret Mary Alacoque in Oakville, MO from 1987-1994. He served a six month Sabbatical at Harvard in 1994 before being assigned to Immaculate Conception Church in Old Monroe, where he served from 1994-2011. Father Greg served as Retired Priest in Residence at St. Peter Church in Kirkwood from 2011-2021. He moved to Our Lady of Life in St. Louis in April, 2021. Father Greg served as Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus, the Missouri Highway Patrol, and the Missouri Mules. He was active in the St. Vincent DePaul Society and served the Pro Life Apostolate of the diocese. He enjoyed traveling, with many trips abroad to Europe, to China and Cuba as well as to Israel, often serving as chaplain. He was quite a student of history, was an avid genealogist and just loved being around people. He was very active, playing handball and racket ball; and was quite the Cardinals baseball fan. He especially enjoyed spending time with his brother, Fred, at the log cabin they built outside of St. Genevieve, MO. Father Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Amelia Schmidt; two brothers: Fred J. Schmidt and Eugene Schmidt; and two sisters: Lorraine Baker and Mary Mueller. Survivors include his sister, Joan Aubuchon who resides at Our Lady of Life in St. Louis; 28 nieces and nephews, numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 5, 2024 at Immaculate Conception Church. Memorials may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society or to Pro-Life in care of Carter-Ricks Funeral Home, 3838 East Highway 47, P.O. Box 253, Winfield, MO 63389.
