Obituary of Alex J. Vehige

A Mass of Christian Burial for Alex Joseph Vehige of Old Monroe, MO, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church near Old Monroe. Msgr. Gregory Schmidt, church pastor, will officiate with burial in Immaculate Conception Cemetery near Old Monroe. Serving as pallbearers will be Lori Orf, Holly Willis, Don Moxley, Bill Vehige, Mike Vehige, Steve Vehige, Andy Wilmes and David Ziegemeier. Mr. Vehige, 92, died Tuesday morning, April 1, 2008 at the Mother of Good Council Home in Normandy, MO. Born January 26, 1916 in Flint Hill, he was the son of Otto and Frances Rickamp Vehige. He was united in marriage on September 28, 1937 in Old Monroe to Josephine Gertrude Burkemper. This union was blessed with five children: Betty, Geri, Rich, Dotty and Joe. Mr. Vehige farmed the Vehige homestead near Old Monroe his entire lifetime. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Parish near Old Monroe and a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. Mr. Vehige was also a founding member of the Old Monroe Lions Club and active in the community. He was an avid and very knowledgeable baseball fan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Frances Vehige; one grandson, Joseph William Vehige; one great-grandson, Alexander Joseph Wilmes; and his beloved wife of almost 70 years, Josephine Vehige who died August 21, 2007. Survivors include two sons: Richard Vehige and his wife, Carolyn, of Town & Country, MO, and Joe Vehige and his wife, Jeanine, of St. Charles, MO; three daughters: Betty Ziegemeier and her husband, Jack, of St. Paul, MO, Geri Wilmes and her husband, Gene, of Josephville, MO, and Dotty Moxley and her husband, Don, of St. Charles; 24 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren and twelve great, great-grandchildren. He also leaves three sisters-in-law: Ann Schipper of Troy, MO, Margie Burkemper of O'Fallon, MO and Wilma Burkemper of Troy; 51 nieces & nephews, several cousins, other relatives and many friends. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2008 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home near Winfield. A Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. during the visitation at the funeral home. Visitation will continue from 8:30 a.m. until time of the Mass at Immaculate Conception Church.
