Obituary of Lawrence Ackfeld

Lawrence F. Ackfeld A Mass of Christian Burial for Lawrence Ferdinand Ackfeld of Elsberry, MO, was held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 4, 2003 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elsberry. Father Tom Wissler, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Troy, officiated with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery in St. Louis, MO. Mr. Ackfeld, 83, died Monday morning, September 1, 2003 at his home near Elsberry. Born June 13, 1920 in Freeburg, MO, he was the son of the late Henry and Theresa Patton Ackfeld. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II from October 25, 1941 until October 27, 1945. He was united in marriage on November 9, 1946 in Jennings, MO to Elwanda Rose Taber. She preceded him in death on July 30, 1974. Mr. Ackfeld was employed as a bus driver for Bi State Transportation for 32 years, retiring in 1977. He was Commander of the 12th District of the VFW in St. Louis County; member and Quartermaster at VFW Post #4105 in St. Louis; member and Quartermaster for 20 years at a different VFW Post in St. Louis; and a member and Commander of the Military Order of the Cooties in St. Louis, MO. Mr. Ackfeld was a member of the American Legion Post #226 in Elsberry and finance officer for 13 years, and a member of the Alton Eagles. He was also a Charter member of the Knight of Columbus in Elsberry and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elsberry. Besides his parents, Henry and Theresa Ackfeld, and his beloved wife of almost 28 years, Elwanda Ackfeld; he was preceded in death by two sisters: Marie Hudson and Leona Lamburth; one granddaughter, Laurie Ann Winn; one infant son, Lawrence Richard Ackfeld; and his companion of 30 years, Joan Dawe, who died July 26, 2002. Survivors include one son, Richard J. Ackfeld and his wife, Jacqueline, of St. Charles, MO; one daughter, Shari Hagler and her husband, James, of Troy, MO; seven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; several other relatives and friends. Visitation was held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 3, 2003 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.
