O'Garlan C Ricks
Funeral services for O'Garlan C Ricks of Elsberry, MO will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at the Elsberry United Methodist Church. Rev. Michael Lockhart, church pastor, will officiate, assisted by Rev. Marvin Brawngardt of St. Charles, MO. Burial will be in Elsberry City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Danny Ricks, Brad Trescott, Greg Cissell, Jimmy Ricks, Eric Ruegg, and Steve Schroeder. Honorary pallbearers will be Chad Stone, Marc Hill, Don Bowers, Raymond and Betty Momphard, Marion Keim, Robyn Loesing, Matt Loesing, Judy Robinson, Larry and Kayla Carter, Peggy Talbot, Julie Kerpash, Doug Bolden, Frank Teasley and Anna May Carr.
Mr. Ricks, 89, died Saturday evening, May 28, 2005 at the Lincoln County Medical Center in Troy, MO. Born March 10, 1916 in Argentville, Lincoln County, MO, he was the youngest of five children born to Albert Lee and Estelle Mary Vinyard Ricks. A 1934 graduate of Winfield High School, he attended Hannibal-LaGrange Junior College in Hannibal, MO before going to Mortuary School in St. Louis, MO. Mr. Ricks founded Ricks Funeral Home in Winfield on January 17, 1937 after serving his mortuary apprenticeship in St. Louis. He was united in marriage on June 1, 1941 in Elsberry to Kathryn Grace Trescott. This union was blessed with three children: Carol Ricks, Allen Lewis Ricks and Christian Trescott Ricks.
Turning down a deferment from military service, Mr. Ricks volunteered and served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army from October 29, 1943 until he was honorably discharged November 6, 1945. He served in the South Pacific in the Philippines, New Guinea and Biac, earning an APTC ribbon with two bronze service stars, and a Philippine Liberation ribbon with one bronze service star. Returning to Missouri in late 1945, he re-opened Ricks Funeral Home in Winfield and opened Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry in 1946.
In service to his community, Mr. Ricks was a long-time member of and served as president of the Elsberry Chamber of Commerce. He was a 50-year member and past-Commander of the Elsberry American Legion Post #226; a 50-year member of the New Salem Masonic Lodge in Winfield and later the New Hope Masonic Lodge in Elsberry, as well as the Order of the Eastern Star in Winfield. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge for many years, and served as president of the Elsberry Kiwanis Club. He also served several years on the Lincoln County R-II School District Board of Education.
Mr. Ricks was also active within his profession and was a 50-year member of the Missouri Funeral Directors Association, serving as president in 1965-66. He was also a 50-year member of the National Funeral Directors Association and served on several national committees. He was appointed to the Missouri State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors by Governor Warren Hearnes and reappointed by Governor Kit Bond, serving as president.
Mr. & Mrs. Ricks were very active in the Democratic Party and were named the Ninth District Grass-Roots Award in 1984; and were named Lincoln County Grass-Roots Workers in 1998. He served as Democratic Committeeman of Hurricane Township for eight years.
On March 1, 1981, Mr. & Mrs. Ricks sold Ricks Funeral Homes of Elsberry and Winfield to J. Larry and Kayla Carter after 44 years of serving families in eastern Lincoln County, retiring in Elsberry. Mr. Ricks continued to assist the Carters for several years.
An avid fan of Elsberry High School athletic teams and named their "#1 Fan", Mr. Ricks was awarded lifetime passes to all EHS sporting events.
Besides his parents, Albert and Estelle Ricks, he was preceded in death by one brother, Nathan Ricks in 1998; two sisters: Beatrice East in 1998 and Wilma "Billie" Dailey in 2002.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 64 years, Kathryn Ricks of Elsberry; two sons: Allen Ricks of Manchester, MO, and Chris Ricks and his wife, Bonnie, of Jefferson City, MO; one daughter, Carol Ricks of Elsberry; and two grandchildren: Andrea Louise Ricks and Christian Trescott "Scott" Ricks, II. He also leaves one brother, Orval Ricks of St. Charles, MO; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday, May 30, 2005 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home near Winfield; and from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry. Memorials may be given to the Joseph R. Palmer Family Memorial Library or the Elsberry United Methodist Church in care of Carter-Ricks Funeral Home, 107 South Fifth Street, Elsberry, MO 63343.
